It's completely fucked, won't read any discs. I put in a game or movie, close it, it says "reading" for five seconds then just goes back to "open tray"

well, it sounds like it is in fact dying. i don't know how to perm. fix it, but you should go out to best buy and buy a disc that has these little bristles on it, and you put it in your system and follow the instructions, and it will clean the lens. They're cheap.
It worked for for a couple months when my shit was doing what yours is.
If it doesn't work. I suggest wrapping your shit in a towel and leaving it on for a few days, so you can then send it in and get a new one.
